The 2013 Core Series wrapped up on the 5th & 6th of Oct with our first ever double-header competitions at Hibiscus Skate Park and Ride On Indoor Park. Its been a long wait since Rd 2 back in May, so it was awesome to see the riders out supporting the final round.
The level of riding has stepped up again this year – some of the runs being put down wouldn’t look out of place at international contests! Everything from triple trucks, flip whips, 720s and crazy 360 combos was on display all weekend.
Saturdays comp at Hibs was the first time young Boyd Hilder recorded a win in the Pro Class. His riding has progressed out of sight this year and he’s definitely someone to watch in the future. With a final run that started with a triple-truck over the hip, he was always going to be hard to stop. Jason Watts was nipping at his heels in 2nd place though, with an amazing run of huge airs, unique lines and combos no-one else has thought of. Dylan White had another solid ride, sealing his 3rd successive 3rd place for this year. Saturday’s comp setup Jason Watts for the series win, with a 2pt margin over Dylan.
Sunday’s contest at Ride On Indoor Park was just as close in the Pro Class – with Dylan, Jason and Boyd all throwing down crazy runs. Dylan double-pegged the 6ft sub – and bar-dropped in. Boyd did the biggest wall ride transfer in the park. But for the 2nd year running, Jason Watts owned this park. He had lines no one else saw, the craziest dip-3s over the box and combos like 270-lookback-to-tuck.
This win also wrapped up the 2013 Core Series Championship for Jason Watts. He is also the first person ever to progress all the way from winning the Jnr Core Series to the Pro Title (he won the Jnr Series in 2008).
The Am & Junior classes also turned up some great riding. Storm Gale took home the series win for the Juniors (with Ryland Kindness a close 2nd). And Matty Vaux claimed the Am title – only a few points ahead of the only female in the competition – Peta Shepard! Both were super consistent throughout the series and it paid off!
So all that wraps up the 8th Core Series. Once again, these events can’t happen without the sponsors so we need to give massive props to Colony BMX, Ride On Park & Store, JC BMX, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Mt Gravatt PCYC and all the staff, judges, friends and riders who help out every time. Keep an eye out for big things next year.
